Ken Tracy received his bachelor of science in art education at Louisiana College and
a master of arts in painting at Northwestern State University. Ken exhibits his pottery
in galleries throughout the country from New York, California, North Carolina, to
George. Local representation is in Alexandria, Baton Rouge, and Sorrento,
Ken's work is decorated with floral designs influenced by local flora of Louisiana.
There are 20 different patterns of flowers. Newly added designs include pine trees,
live oaks, and cypress. Decoration is done with a cobalt blue slip on white clay which
produces a deep rich blue finish. There has been a recent addition of white slip on
white clay that results in a more subtle design.
His wheel-thrown forms tend to be classically influenced, but they sometimes evolve
into simpler, contemporary shapes. Each pot is decorated with floral designs using
the sgraffito technique. After pots are dried, he applies ten coats of cobalt slip on the
surface. The design is etched free-hand through the colored surface into the clay. All
negative spaces between the flowers are then scraped away leaving the contrasting
blue floral pattern against the white clay.
